Our 5,000 square foot garden was designed in conjunction with the horticulture and landscaping instructional program at the Federal Correctional Institution in El Reno. Several ideas for the shape, dimensions, plants, soil and amendments, and seating area were drawn and presented for consideration. The main garden is in the shape of the state of Oklahoma, and includes pollinator plants, herbs, vegetables, and native grasses. With the design and development help of the Canadian County Master Gardeners and funding from the El Reno Public School Foundation, two Native American Spiral Gardens were constructed. Plants in these two structures are those that would have been used for culinary and medicinal purposes in the early days of Fort Reno.
